Bruce, interesting you would think of Northern Exposure... we live about as far north in California as you can get, in the southern end of the Cascade mountain range.

I did most of my OJT on my own sites too. I started learning in 1995 and did my own sites for years. Still, just before I got my business license and started advertising, I got a HTML handbook and read it cover to cover. Learned a lot!

Wow! interesting story, I was feeling uncomfortably too similar to the guy you talked about. ha!! Only, I've decided to do the OJT on my OWN sites for a good while before I try to call myself a professional designer ready to do jobs for others. *smile* Funny, when you say a "small town", I imagine norther exposure, you know, a small town in Alaska. But know that's unlikely. but funny, don't you think?

Great article, and I found it at just the right time, as I am an experienced web designer who has just started a freelance business. I have spent years working for others and finally decided I no longer want to work my tail off just to make someone *else* rich.

I can identify with your experience with the young man, as my first 2 clients needed site redesigns due to the fact that their previous designer (same one in both cases) did terribly outdated, sub-par work.

What inspired me most about your article is that you sustained your business for years despite the apparent obstacle of living in a tiny remote town. If you can do it, then I guess I -- living in a major metropolitan area, population: approx. 350,000 -- can too!!

Wow, I'm sorry to hear about this! It sounds like he was in way over his head, and it's too bad that you knew what you were doing and were still affected. At least you know that you provided quality work!

I agree with you that this blog will be a great way for you to help people to learn about web design. It's great that you're willing to!
