Another Day, Another Dollar

I closed up shop here last year after getting a “day job” as a cook in a nearby restaurant. Though I enjoyed the work, that job has ended and I’m back, ready to prosper through working from my home. The Internet is a wonderful tool for generating income, and I know that if I put my heart into it, the money will come.

Recently someone living in a foreign country expressed a desire to earn money with her writing skills. I told her:

“Since you live in a foreign country, you could probably make lots of money there by offering your skills with English locally.

I worked as a web designer for several years and got way more job offers than I could handle, and I live in a tiny town of only 1200 people, and most of my jobs were local! Why not start a small business, advertise your skills a bit, and see what comes of it? With my web design, I actually did get content writing and SEO jobs too though that wasn’t specifically what I advertised about.

The jobs are out there. Open the door and don’t be shocked if you’re inundated with requests for your help!”

  1. Wow! Your site has a lot going on. Looks complicated. I just got into the online web stuff a few months ago, getting into it, but there sure is a lot to it. I have to admit, when I read that part about you having to quit for the “day job”, it made me wonder. “gee, if someone with so much knowledge has to get out of it to get a day job, what makes ME think I can?”. Probably should go back to the youtube.com and watch a few more Tony Robbins, zig zigler videos. ha!

  2. Bruce, you have a good point there. The reasons I took the day job were that (1) I hadn’t worked outside my home in eighteen years, and wanted to try it again… and (2) I was burnt out on working at home with web design clients.

I LOVE web design, but I needed a change. And now that I’m getting back into web design, my business focus will be quite different than what I was doing before. This time I’m creating a hosting site specifically for writers and bloggers. It isn’t open for business yet, but you can look at my initial efforts: Write Web Host.

What I learned from working outside my home: (1) Cooking for a living is fun but if you have a college education and are able to do other things (like write novels and do web design) the other employees can get resentful, become jealous, and start hating you; (2) You can’t trust employers to be as loyal to you as you are to them. To put it clearly… I worked there for a year and a half. I was just about a perfect employee, and on September 8, 2008 I got PROMOTED to shift supervisor. The other supervisor didn’t like that and apparently did a lot of badmouthing and complaining on my behalf. I got FIRED two weeks after my promotion because she didn’t want to work with me.

Honestly… I’m kinda relieved… and happy about it.

Years ago I worked for the Department of Social Services as a welfare caseworker. I noticed my clients were constantly being hired and fired, or hired and laid off. Their jobs were totally unstable. So I decided that I wanted to work at home and be self-employed. I started a few business efforts and that continued until last year when I thought it might be cool to work for someone else and get a steady paycheck.

In the end, I’m reminded… self employment rocks!
