My “Okay to Play” Art Journal

August 10, 2024 :: by Linda Jo Martin

I’m one of those people who takes life so seriously I have to actually name an art journal “Okay to Play” just to give myself permission.

Sunshine Gardener, sketchbook art by Linda Jo

This is the first page in my journal.. something I did about six months ago and have already forgotten doing. But it is in my journal so I know it is my art. (Short memory these days? It is 2024 and I’m 72 now as of July 13.) This is called “Sunshine Gardener.”

This was done with acrylic paint in a watercolor paper type journal. I am waiting for further inspiration to develop it into something worthwhile.

Prayer Girl, sketchbook art by Linda Jo

I like this one and featured it on my book blog this month. I had to turn the sketchbook upside down to discover the image in my scribbles. Great fun. Title: “Prayer Girl.”

Scribbles, by Linda Jo, an unfinished art form...

More scribbles. Just having fun.

The Sower and The Blessing, sketchbook art by Linda Jo

Here’s what the scribbles turned into. “The Sower” – because I’m reading The Letters of Vincent Van Gogh. And “The Blessing” – because that’s what I saw in my scribbles.

Unfinished play art... Pumpkin People by Linda Jo

This is unfinished…. just more scribble play art. What will it be? I’m currently calling this “The Dancing Pumpkin People.”

Right now, this is not my favorite. I’m moving on.

Baby in a Basket, by Linda Jo, September 2024

In case you didn’t guess already – there’s a baby in that basket.

More later, I hope.

Linda

About Me

Hi! I'm Linda Jo Martin, an artist in training. Formerly I was a xhtml/css web designer. This used to be my webdesign business site. Since I retired I've preserved the old articles about webdesign business issues but transformed the site for my adventures in creativity. This includes art, writing, and whatever else comes up in the creativity sector of life. I also review books. I'll review art books here, but my main site for book reviews is Linda Book Lady.

Hello – I’m going to use this corner of the universe to tell you how happy I am that you stopped by to visit my site. This website has been a long-term project for me. I started my webdesign business back around 2002 and used it to supplement my meager income while my children were growing up. What a joy it was to be able to earn some money and help support the family! However now my children are adults and I’m retired. I still live in the Klamath River Valley here in far-northern California. My heart and thoughts have turned to art, something I saved for my retirement years. I call myself an artist in training, but truly, I think artistry training should never end.
